Turkish students disappear in Egypt after arrest by security forces

February 16, 2016

Two Turkish students have disappeared since Egyptian security forces arrested them from their flat in Cairo on Sunday dawn, a rights group said Tuesday.

According to the London-based Arab Organisation for Human Rights, the two students are 22-year-old twin brothers Cihat Kirtoklu and Mucahit Kirtoklu. They were studying Arabic language in Cairo as a prerequisite to joining Al-Azhar University.

Hikmet Kirtoklu, the father of the two brothers, told AOHR that he received a phone call from one of his sons’ friends telling him they had been arrested by security officers who broke into their flat at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday 14 February 2016. They had since then disappeared.

AOHR expressed concerns that the Kirtoklu brothers would be victims of the same fate of Giulio Regeni, the Italian PhD student who wastortured to death in Egypt recently. It called on UN Secretary General to intervene to ensure the immediate release of Cihat and Mucahit.
