The Egyptian judiciary has issued dozens of death sentences against opponents of the military coup, amid widely criticised claims by local and international human rights organisations demanding to halt the trials, which are described as being politicised and lacking the standards of fair trials.

The NGO, Justice for Human Rights, has reported that 45 out of 50 sentences sent to the Mufti for ratification were approved during the first half of 2016 only.
