Former political prisoner Mohanad Ehab died of leukaemia on Sunday, October 2, in a New York City hospital after losing a battle against leukaemia. Mohanad’s family claim that his health had deteriorated due to medical negligence during his detention in Borj al-Arab prison in Alexandria.

Before his death he was quoted as saying, “Being captivated by cancer and the fact that I can’t leave my bed is way better than what [Egyptian prisoners] are facing right now in prison, thank God.”

The 20-year-old’s name emerged as a trending hashtag on Egyptian social media networks, with another hashtag, Sisi killed Mohanad, placing the blame for his death on Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to Mada Masr.
