Over 26,000 cases of arbitrary arrests recorded within 18 months

The Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms reported that during 2015 and the first half of 2016, the number of arbitrary arrests reached 26,207; with 3,207 cases reported in the first half of 2016, including 169 girls and women.

The arrests in the first half of 2016 by month are as follows:

  • January: 1,268 arrests
  • February: 122 arrests
  • March: 155 arrests
  • April: 1,009 arrests
  • May: 196 arrests
  • June: 146 arrests

Arbitrary arrests and detention are the arrest or detention of an individual, or a group of individuals, in a case in which there is no likelihood or evidence that they committed a crime against legal statute, or in which there has been no proper due process of law.
